Updated AIA Code of Ethics Now Available

Dear AIA Members,  

The 2026 AIA Board of Directors has approved updates to the AIA Code of Ethics & Professional Conduct (Code) following recommendations from the National Ethics Council (NEC). 

These revisions originated from Resolution 2: Inclusion of Additional Underrepresented Groups within the AIA Strategic Plan 2021-2025’s Equity Statement, adopted at the 2024 AIA Annual Business Meeting. In response, the Strategic Council Equity Group reviewed the Code and presented recommendations to the NEC. The NEC carefully evaluated each proposed revision and developed recommendations that were reviewed with legal counsel to ensure the Code remains clear, enforceable, and aligned with AIA's commitment to professionalism and ethical practice. 

The approved updates include: 

• Ethical Standard 1.2: Addition of "equitable environments" 

• Ethical Standard 1.3: Made the language more inclusive and expansive regarding natural and cultural heritages 

• Rule 1.401: Addition of ethnicity, marital status, and familial status to the list of protected characteristics 

• Ethical Standard 1.5: Addition of language promoting belonging 

• Ethical Standard 2.4: Addition of references to health equity and well-being 

The Code reflects the architecture profession's commitment to integrity, professionalism, respect, and service to the public. The Code applies to all AIA members and serves as the foundation for the Institute's professional standards program. 

Members are encouraged to review the updated Code and familiarize themselves with these revisions.
