The District needed a dynamic, community-centered space capable of hosting everything from pep rallies to local events, becoming a hub of pride for the entire community. The 1950s-era gymnasium was ill-equipped to meet their current needs with poor lighting, low ceilings, minimal clearances around the main court, and inadequate seating for the High School population. The athletic trainers and team rooms were not centralized within the building and were far from the sports fields, making access inefficient.
The new design brought the fitness center to the front of the building, creating easy public access while maintaining security of the remaining building. Centralizing the trainer’s room with the team rooms toward the back of the building where the old fitness center was located allowed for more efficient support of athletics and functional access to the exterior sports fields. This also allowed the gymnasium’s footprint to expand west. Through high-quality glazing, we were able to take advantage of natural light along the South face of the building without extreme solar heat gain. This also allowed us to take advantage of daylight harvesting in our lighting designs for additional energy savings.
Now, the gym has enough room to comfortably fit more than the entire high school — students, staff, and guests — for big events like pep rallies, concerts, and community gatherings. The ceilings now provide above-minimum clearances for indoor sports. The new design also includes bright pops of color, modern HVAC systems, natural lighting, better acoustics, and a high-tech sound system to create a space that feels vibrant and welcoming for the whole community to enjoy.
