As part of the school district's initiative to enhance career readiness, the design team transformed an underutilized third-floor wing of a middle/high school into a vibrant, accessible hub for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM). The renovation had to address space constraints while supporting the district’s growing trade-skill programs, including Robotics, Coding, Video Production, and Computer-Aided Design. 

To meet these needs, flexible, multi-purpose labs were created, equipped with the infrastructure required to support 3D printers, touch-screen displays, and charging stations for one-to-one devices. The design further incorporated mobile furniture, moveable glass partitions, and wireless connectivity, empowering students to freely explore in a boundless collaborative landscape.

Sustainability and occupant health were also key design pillars. This led to the incorporation of energy-efficient HVAC systems for improved ventilation and air quality; dimmable full-spectrum LED lighting; and enhanced insulation for optimized building performance and controlled acoustics. New exterior windows maximize natural light and thermal performance while reducing solar gain for increased comfort.

The design also promotes cross-curricular collaboration and student autonomy. Spectating portals into labs invite curiosity, while the reimagined hallways, now treated as extensions of the classroom, foster informal learning opportunities. These intentional design choices encourage the mastery of new skills, highlight their real-world applications in technology-based careers, and prepare students for future paths beyond high school.

Today, the STEAM wing supports academic growth and strengthens the district’s ability to attract specialized educators. By cultivating creativity and critical thinking, the space reshapes the educational landscape of this rural town and equips its students with skills needed in today’s technology-driven world.
