The University responded to growing demand in the community for expanded inpatient psychiatric care by developing a new state-of-the-art inpatient mental health unit on the fourth floor of the existing R-wing building.

Previously used as office space for the department, this project involved the relocation of over 30 offices to make space for the new 20-bed adult inpatient unit, extensive upgrades to the existing building infrastructure, and a complete renovation of the fourth-floor space. We worked closely with URMC to develop a design that would reflect the organization’s vision of world class patient care with enhanced safety for patients, visitors and staff.

The design of the new unit was guided by several key concepts: safety and security for all occupants; an environment for healing; and the preservation of patient dignity.

In mental health care environments, there is a fine line between privacy and safety. This unit achieves both by providing private spaces for every patient while also including thoughtfully designed details that minimize risk and allow for discreet oversight by the staff. Clear sightlines throughout the unit and careful planning of programmatic elements also naturally reduce stressors and help create an environment that is calm, comfortable and safe for patients.

Encouraging healthy social interactions was a key consideration of the design. Several dedicated social areas were created for a wide range of activities, from dining and games to yoga and movies. Bench alcoves were also created between the bedrooms to encourage informal socialization within neighborhoods of rooms.

Treatment will occur on the unit through dedicated spaces for group therapy, individual consults, family meetings, and digital court hearings. Ample natural light, biophilic elements, and durable yet warm finishes are all key to creating a warm and welcoming environment for healing.
