The new Research Building at RIT brings together eighteen research laboratories, classrooms, and shared public spaces including a welcoming two-story lobby. It replaces an outdated building on the site, making way for a modern, adaptable research environment.
The project presented a unique challenge: creating highly functional laboratory spaces without knowing the exact future research programs. To address this, the design team developed adaptable laboratories and MEP systems that can accommodate a wide range of research needs over time.
Flexibility and functionality are complemented by an emphasis on natural light. A perimeter corridor, lined with glass on the exterior and clerestory windows on the interior allows daylight to filter into both public spaces and laboratories, creating a bright and engaging environment. The result is a forward-looking research building that supports functionality, collaboration, teaching, and discovery, while remaining responsive to evolving demands.
