This project involves the transformation of a former big-box bookstore into an efficient academic building that supports two distinct programs under one roof. Prioritizing practicality over high design, the approach balances specific workplace and academic functional needs, with the responsible use of resources.

The first floor consolidates RIT’s University Advancement offices, previously scattered across campus and limited in their ability to collaborate or establish a shared identity. Bringing the staff together strengthens communication, camaraderie, and connection. Working within a constrained budget, the expansive retail floor plate was reimagined as an open workplace that capitalizes on its generous volume and existing infrastructure. Workspaces are organized into neighborhoods around a central commons—a skylit, high-bay atrium that serves as a hub for informal work, meals, meetings, training, and events. The atrium’s scale alleviates the density of surrounding offices, while overhead daylight improves comfort and orientation throughout the floor. Understated finishes create a calm, professional environment that encourages in-person engagement.

The second floor supports RIT’s growing Certified Program, a workforce development initiative serving students, professionals, and community partners. Meeting rooms, an adaptable classroom, and a café-style break area are arranged around a central lounge, fostering informal learning and spontaneous interaction. In contrast to the first floor’s restrained palette, Certified’s spaces introduce more bold and vibrant material language inspired by university branding. Daylight and exterior views are maximized along the perimeter storefront, and translucent glazing at the atrium visually connects the two programs across floors.

Accommodating distinct departmental functions within a single building required a careful balance of identity, autonomy, and security. Strategic planning, deliberate circulation, and selective use of glazing provide necessary separation while preserving visual connection and a shared presence.

Through adaptive reuse, a former retail shell has been reimagined as an intuitive, flexible workplace that supports both administrative and educational functions, positioning the building for long-term institutional use.
