The East River Road Imaging Office was envisioned as a departure from the University of Rochester’s traditional offsite office model. The primary programmatic requirement was to transform an existing, conventionally planned office suite with cubicle layouts into a flexible, modern workplace that supports both focused individual work and meaningful staff collaboration. The redesigned suite includes private access and amenities, collaborative lounge areas, and four private hoteling workrooms that accommodate a dynamic and rotating staff.
A key site challenge was working within an existing shell while maximizing daylight from large exterior windows and addressing acoustic control within an open, collaborative environment. The design process focused on balancing transparency, privacy, and sound control without compromising openness or comfort. A glazing system was introduced to distribute natural light throughout the suite while maintaining visual connection between spaces. To mitigate sound transfer near shared amenities, ceiling baffles were installed over the kitchenette to enhance acoustic performance and provide visual interest. Additional hanging acoustic solutions offer sound dampening and privacy within the space.
The solution integrates natural and innovative materials to create a welcoming touchdown space that encourages collaboration while respecting individual work needs. Preserved moss garden walls in the seating area contribute to sound absorption, improve indoor air quality, and introduce a biophilic element that supports occupant well-being. Through carefully selected finishes, furniture, and architectural elements, each seating zone offers flexibility—supporting teamwork, partial privacy, or relaxation with access to power and technology.
Technically and socially, the project advances workplace design by promoting adaptability, acoustic comfort, and wellness-driven features. The result is an engaging, innovative office environment that redefines offsite workspaces and fosters staff collaboration and creativity.
