Director, Architecture

Division: Building Design Services

Reports to: VP of Building Design Services (BDS)


Be responsible for all aspects of Architecture Department. Requires the ability to communicate with team leaders and VP of BDS and hold each accountable. The Director will be responsible for Business Development and growth of the Department. The Director will participate in Department meetings both weekly and long term. Shall understand their Department’s S.W.O.T. (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, & Threats). Is responsible for ensuring regular divisional business tasks are being completed (Backlog, Monthly Billings, etc).


The overall expectations of the Director is to support the division in its growth both internally and with external clients both direct and through consultants. The Director will need to meet regularly with key industry leaders to form relationships to benefit PDG. Will be expected to forecast when the division needs support. It must be understood that roles and responsibilities will differ from time to time and may not align with the below outlined.



  • Support the VP of BDS in the development of the Department budget

  • Maintains the Department backlog and recommends corrective actions

  • Reviews, develops and recommends corrections to the utilization

  • Supports the VP  of BDS in the development of financial targets

  • Identifies potential issues with financial targets and recommends corrective actions

  • Holds accountable staff for timesheet submission

  • Ensures divisional billing reports are completed and returned and holds staff accountable if necessary

  • Review timesheets of the division


  • Supports the development & implementation of a BDS standard

  • Supports the development & implementation of a QA/QC process

Strategic Plan / Business Development

  • Work with the VP of BDS to develop and maintain a strategic plan with 1, 5, and 10  year goals

  • Work with Team leaders to achieve the strategic plan goals

  • Strengthen local and regional relationships with owner clients and consultant clients

  • Identify strategic clients/projects to pursue

  • Attend local and state events beneficial to the growth of PDG

  • Attend tradeshows as necessary for the development of a market

  • Prepare, in conjunction with the marketing group, proposals

Staff Needs/Accountability

  • Host Bi-Monthly division meetings

  • Hold Team Leaders and Staff accountable

  • Deliver end of year salary performance and incentive comp to team leaders and for team members

  • Perform annual reviews of Team Leaders and set annual professional goals

  • Mentor Team Leaders to achieve their set goals

  • Work to create synergy between other divisional offices and team leaders

  • Be available for all major project related issues

  • Be available for all major staff related issues (personnel disputes, scheduling, utilization, etc)

  • Regular visits to remote offices where departmental staff is housed

  • Manage departmental training requirements

  • Relay company/professional development training needs (PM, presentation, Revit training, etc.) to VP of BDS

  • Maintain departmental long term staffing needs

  • Perform departmental recruiting (inc. review resumes, interviews, work with HR, write offer letters, fill out employee initiation forms, perform new hire tours, etc)

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets.

Physical Demands

This is mainly a sedentary role, however, handling of large format drawings, and field investigations may be required. This would require the ability to lifts the documents and climb ladders as necessary.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full time position. Core business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5 p.m. It is expected that this position will routinely meet with clients after hours when required.


Regular travel will be required to meet staff in other office locations.

The overall expectations of this position are to produce construction drawings and understand basic construction practices for implementation during construction administration.
